Interview

Radio 1190: "What is your name, age, and major? How long have you been here and what do you do for the station?"

Uncle Jeff: "Major Minor. Uncle Jeff is Jefferson P. Holland, BA in Geography and a Minor in Fine Arts, past tense. I'm quite old now and have a long grey beard to prove it. I've been involved with KVCU 1190 since 1998, snared by DJ Loki when he did the Morning Show. I made the mistake of calling in on the "Vintage Picks" segment that Loki did, and offered up some old 78s I'd just transcribed. Somehow I ended up calling in via cell phone on my way to work every morning, and the Mutt & Jeff team of Loki and Uncle Jeff was born. Me talking on the radio and driving was very dangerous. We took it to the internet startup GoGaGa Radio, and named the show "Route 78 West" over a 12-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon. John Quigley pulled us back into the fold at 1190 'cause he felt those college kids needed some edumacation on Honky Tonk, Truckers Songs, Surf and Spaghetti Westerns... Its been a steady ride, and the radio show lets me justify a continual buying spree to keep it fresh, and keep on learning. We try to keep the historical bent interesting, and frequently hear from folks who 'get it'. It's kind of scary when they recite whole Loki and Jeff diatribes at concerts though... We both try to make people think about politics and music.

Radio 1190: "If someone were to run into you at a show, how would they recognize you?"

UNcle Jeff: "Um, let me think... long grey/white beard, cranky, too tall to be standing in the front of the crowd (I've thought about having 6 inches of my leg-bones surgically removed). You can usally hear me talking about music, something I seem to have a few opinions about. You can find me talking to Milkman Dan a lot, 'cause he's an authority too. And then there's that thing about taping the shows that we don't want to get too specific about here. There's something about being within a 10 foot radius of the soundboard mixer..."

Radio 1190: "Pick at least five albums."

Uncle Jeff: "Ah the tough part! It depends on what time of day and what mood for music. Right now I'm enjoying Sam Prekop's "Who's Your New Professor" 'cause it's just so cool and textured. I love
